Can you lose your native language is an amazing article chronicling the experiences of a bilingual author who at times finds it hard to keep his native language. The author goes into several examples and studies that backs up how and why this happens. This is relevant to our students today as many begin to "Lose" their native language skills as they begin to gain their academic English skills.
The Untranslatable Emotions You Never Knew You had explains how languages dig deeper into emotion words than English often does, and speakers often grapple with how to accurately communicate their feelings when the equivalent word does not exist in their second language. This is often a problem with our ESOL students, and not just with emotion words, but many words within the English language, the pause they experience while trying to understand or respond to a teacher is often due to this very issue.
